Do you find yourself being overly critical or judgmental of yourself for not achieving enough or meeting your own expectations? Perhaps you have been hurt by others, and find it difficult to trust and be vulnerable? If this sounds familiar, connecting to the water element can help you move through your emotions and find the joy of showing compassion.
The water element can flow, adapt, and transform. It is a powerful force that symbolises emotions, change, and healing. By connecting with the water element, we can tap into its fluidity and use its energy to help us move through challenging emotions and find greater compassion for ourselves and others.
How you can use the water element to move through this emotion
Here are some ways to connect with the water element while also cultivating self-compassion and compassion for others:
Take a mindful walk by the water: Whether it's a river, lake, or ocean, take a walk by the water and focus on your breathing. Allow your mind to quiet and observe the movement of the water. Notice any emotions that come up, and practice self-compassion by allowing yourself to feel those emotions without judgement. As you continue your walk, try to cultivate empathy for others who may also be struggling with difficult emotions.
Meditate near water: Find a quiet spot near a body of water and sit in meditation. Visualise yourself as a droplet of water, merging and flowing with the larger body of water. As you meditate, cultivate self-compassion by focusing on your breath and allowing any negative thoughts or emotions to flow away from you like water. Then, practice compassion for others by visualising all beings around the world as droplets of water, flowing together as one interconnected whole.
Engage in water-based activities: Activities such as swimming, kayaking, or paddleboarding allow you to physically connect with the water element. As you participate in these activities, focus on the sensation of the water against your skin and allow yourself to fully immerse in the present moment. Practice self-compassion by allowing yourself to enjoy the activity without any self-criticism or judgement. As you engage in water-based activities, also practice compassion for others by cultivating a sense of camaraderie with those around you, recognizing that we are all interconnected and flow together like the water.
Practice gratitude for water: Take time to express gratitude for the water element and all it provides for us. Think about how water nourishes our bodies, provides for plants and animals, and is essential for life. As you practice gratitude, also extend compassion to those who may not have access to clean water or who may be suffering from the effects of climate change and other environmental challenges.
By connecting with the water element and cultivating self-compassion and compassion for others, we can find greater peace and balance in our lives. Remember that these are skills that can be developed over time with practice and patience.
